In 1990, he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives and in 1992 to the Florida Senate where he served until 2002. He was the 1998 nominee for Secretary of the Air Force and the 2006 Democratic nominee for Lt. Governor of Florida. A retired United States Air Force colonel and fighter pilot, he is also active in numerous Miami civic and community organizations.
